An important milestone for the British royal family marked the start of this month.
Prince Harry landed in London to mark the tenth anniversary of the Invictus Games. While he was there, King Charles gave his brother, Prince William, an impressive new title.
Even though a lot of people thought it was a major affront to Prince Harry, the timing seemed to be random.
A statement from the Palace states that Prince William has been appointed colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps by King Charles III.
“His Majesty the King will officially hand over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales,” a palace statement reads. “Following His Majesty’s Accession, in August 2023, the King was pleased to announce military appointments, among them the Prince of Wales’ appointment as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps. His Majesty the King held that position as Prince of Wales for thirty-one years.
In his new role, William is currently in charge of Harry’s former squad. In 2008, Harry started training as an Army Air Corps “Grading” after completing the Pilot’s Selection Board interview.
Prince Harry’s official biography read, “After successfully completing that Army Pilots Course, he was chosen to train on the Apache Attack Helicopter,” before it was removed from the official royal family website. “That day, Prince Harry’s father announced that he had received his provisional wings.” Charles was the colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps at the time, thus Harry saw more significance in the ceremony.
The recent rift between Prince Harry and his father has contributed to the public’s increased curiosity in Prince William’s new title. Speculation on the nature of their interactions—or lack thereof—during Prince Harry’s most recent visit to the UK highlights the complex nature of royal ties.
During his most recent visit, King Charles, Harry’s father, was unable to meet with him due to his “full programme.”
But in his statement, Prince Harry did say that he “hopes to see him soon.”
Despite his lack of chemistry with the Firm members, Harry was excited to return to the UK. He praised Scotty’s efforts and termed the event “amazing,” emphasizing the incredible and essential support that they provide to children.
“The more opportunities you get to do these kinds of events, the more families and kids know this place exists, which is really the most important thing,” Harry reportedly said, according to the BBC.
