Since my wife died, I haven’t spent much time with my daughter, but we still communicate daily. I drove over to her apartment in the hopes of surprising her because all I wanted for my 80th birthday was to see her. She appeared apprehensive and surprised when she opened the door.

“What are you here for, Dad?” She questioned, sounding unsure.”I just wanted to be with you for my birthday,” I responded with a smile.

Her countenance shifted, and she paused before answering, “You can’t stay, Dad. A much is going on in my life. I apologize, but this is not a good moment at all.

It surprised me. She had never before handled me in such a manner. I replied, “Okay, I’ll wait on the sofa until you’re free,” a little offended.
Nevertheless, she persisted and nearly shoved me out the door. “No, Dad, you should really head out of here immediately.”
Reluctantly turning to go, I couldn’t get rid of the uneasy sensation I had. I heard sounds coming from inside the home as I was making my way to my car. My curiosity overcame me, and I peered through the living room window.

There they were, two strangers rushing around in my daughter’s home. My heart was pounding, and I was suddenly anxious. What was taking place? Why was she acting so strangely, and why were others in her house?
I made the decision to get up and dial the cops. They came in a matter of minutes and approached the residence with caution. Following a stressful few moments, the cops reappeared and handcuffed the two strangers. My daughter followed with her eyes welling up with tears.

She ran to give me an embrace and sobbed, “Dad, I’m so sorry.” “I tried to keep you safe. Before you got there, the men broke in. I didn’t know what to do and I didn’t want anything bad to happen to you.

I felt a wave of relief and tightly hugged her. “It is okay, my love. Just knowing you’re secure pleases me.
After recording our statements, the police promised that the invaders would be brought to justice. I spent the remainder of the day with my daughter, sitting on the same sofa that I had wanted to wait on earlier. It was the most amazing birthday I could have asked for, even after the fright. I was even more grateful for our relationship when I realized that my daughter had done everything in her power to keep me safe.
