At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a huge and exquisite cake slice with a Minerva stamped first standard was handled in pure silver from France.950 fine solid silver handle with a steel slice or gilded silver plate. Compared to English sterling, this silver standard is higher.

A gadroon, leafy, and foliate ornamentation rests proud of the gorgeous solid silver handle. As seen in the photo, one side has a blank cartouche. The big slice, softly curved blade is made of plate or steel and still has its original, faint gilding. The rest of the blade is etched in a similar manner and features an exquisite bird landing among the foliage in addition to an elaborate, asymmetrical, partially pierced leaf and foliate portion. Only the part that has been punctured has the blade’s reverse engraved on it.

This came from Sylvaine le Desert’s estate. She was the granddaughter of newspaper owner and minister Alexandre Israel, and the daughter of renowned Parisian journalist Jacques le Desert. These originated from her grandfather’s home in Paris, which is currently known as Place de Alexandre Israel.

By pretending to be a rural girl, Sylvanie managed to survive in occupied France. She became a member of the French resistance while working the land. She spent several years residing in Surrey, England, before passing away in 2009.

This gorgeous long ornamental slice is perfect for presenting pies, cakes, and other sweets. It also looks beautiful on the dining table and would make a thoughtful gift.

Length: 12 1/8 inches; width: 2 5/8 inches.
