There are many unexpected turns and turns in life, and they have the capacity to either break us or strengthen us.
It was like living in an unscripted play for me to navigate grief and new beginnings while growing up without my mother. But in the middle of the storm, my stepmother showed up as a beacon of hope.
She was more than just a new addition to the family; at my worst moments, she gave me stability and affection.
Although she never attempted to take the place of my mother, she added a fresh brightness to our home. She would always reassure me that she was there for me, even in moments when I felt hopeless.
Life still held more shocks for us. The silence in our house after my father’s death was deafening. Like everyone else in my life, I was afraid my stepmother would go. However, Mom told me that we would always stand by each other since we were family.
And we did stick together. My stepmother stood by my side in spite of rumors and criticism from others, demonstrating that the relationships we choose may be just as powerful as those we are born into.
