The host of “The Megyn Kelly Show,” Robert De Niro, addressed the actor’s vocal criticism of Donald Trump and his administration in a recent show. Kelly questioned the actor’s ability to bring about change, pointing out that his outspoken criticism was ineffective in stopping Trump’s election in 2016.
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Kelly remembered an exclusive interview that De Niro had given on her old Fox News program, in which he initially openly declared his dislike for Trump. She countered, though, that De Niro’s participation didn’t produce the intended results.
Kelly’s critique followed De Niro’s press conference, in which he talked about how much he loved New York City and how worried he was about Trump’s ability to ruin it. Kelly called De Niro’s remarks “colossally stupid” and implied that he is a poor messenger because of his fervent political beliefs.
Kelly believes that De Niro is an example of “Trump derangement syndrome” because of his years of outspoken opposition to Trump. She made the implication that, given his contentious reputation, attending politically sensitive events might not be beneficial.
The conversation brings to light the current controversy surrounding celebrities’ political activism and its effects on public discourse.
