The 25-year-old daughter of former President Barack Obama, Malia Obama, gained recognition in the film business with the Sundance Film Festival premiere of her short film Heart. She has chosen to follow her own path and walk away from her well-known family name, writing under the pen name Malia Ann.
In the moving story Heart, a man struggles to come to terms with the death of his mother, who made a unique request in her will. It has been said that Malia’s distinct storytelling style is “strange” and “fairy-tale-like.”
Her passion for filmmaking was nurtured during her time studying cinematography at Harvard University.
Malia’s career path in the entertainment world has drawn both admiration and criticism. On social media, some detractors have called her a “nepo-baby,” suggesting that her famed family ties are the only reason for her success. Malia stands out, too, because of her commitment to her work and her willingness to take chances with her storytelling.
Malia’s picture has received praise in spite of the criticism, and it presently has an IMDb rating of 5.8 out of 10. It’s evident that Malia Obama is committed to establishing a reputation for herself in the film industry—on her own terms.
