For what may be their last visit with their sick grandmother Marlene, Brian and Linda receive a call. Linda’s elder sibling, Brian, inherits her house, leaving her with five ancient, rusty clocks. Brian shows his avaricious side by making fun of her.

Marlene gives them $5,000 each, but Brian is not appreciative and expresses his displeasure. After being moved by her grandmother’s generosity and realizing all the sacrifices she had made for her, Linda decides to take a month off from school to take care of her.

Linda refurbishes Marlene’s home at this time, giving her grandma comfort and happiness once more. Moved to tears, Marlene says she wants to “die happy,” which regrettably occurs not long after the house is completed.

The siblings find out about the will following Marlene’s death. Linda gets the clocks, but Brian is ecstatic to inherit the house. Linda, unperturbed by Brian’s jeers, takes the clocks back to the city without recognizing their significance. She discovers an etching telling her to open one of the clocks one day. She is shocked to learn that the clocks are valuable rare antiques that cost $40,000 apiece.

Linda, overcome with happiness, realizes that although her inheritance appeared to be less substantial, her grandmother’s real goal was to make sure Linda got something worthwhile.

Linda, who has chosen to keep this a secret, considers how her values differ from Brian’s while feeling a strong bond with her grandma. She ends by saying, “True worth goes beyond material possessions,” having had her life changed by the love and wisdom her grandma left behind as hidden treasures.
