In the center of our family-run pizzeria, a storm was brewing. We were informed that we had made a mistake in her order by a furious customer who had come in with incorrect information and fury. She might have ruined our evening, but my grandma, who was always collected and sensible, wasn’t going to allow it.
Grandma smiled softly and listened intently as the woman’s voice became more audible and her words hung there like a challenge. However, Grandma showed no fear. She defused the situation with a few well-timed statements that left the woman looking silly and humiliated.
The woman obviously made a mistake by purchasing the incorrect pizza from the incorrect store. Grandma had called her out on it, with her sharp mind and gut feeling. The tension vanished as everyone in the room burst into laughter. It gave way to a sense of relief and justified rage.
Grandma was obviously savvy because the defeated woman slunk away. With age-old wisdom in her eyes, she remarked, “Life has a funny way of giving us what we deserve.” “It’s a piece of humble pie sometimes.”

I couldn’t help but feel grateful for how things had worked out as we closed the business. It served as a reminder that sometimes all we need to return to earth is a small slice of humble pie and that karma may be quite strong.
