ENDEARING STORY: Following 21 Years of Marriage

My wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie after we were married for 21 years. “I know this other woman loves you and would love to spend some time with you,” she said, despite her obvious affection for you. My wife also wanted me to see my mother, who had been a widow for 19 years, but I could only see her infrequently due to the responsibilities of my three children and my job. I gave her a call that evening to ask her to a movie and dinner.

“What’s up, how are you doing?” she said. “I felt that spending some time with you would be enjoyable,” I answered. The two of us alone. After giving it some thought, she declared, “I would very much like that.”

I was a little anxious when I drove over to pick her up that Friday after work. She was wearing the same dress that she had worn to mark her previous wedding anniversary, and her hair was curled. Her grin came from a face as brilliant as that of an angel. As she climbed into the car, she remarked, “I told my friends that I was going out with my son, and they were impressed.” “They are eager to share our meeting with them.”

We had dinner at a really pleasant, if not particularly elegant, restaurant. With the demeanor of the First Lady, my mother took my arm. I had to peruse the menu after we took a seat. She could only read huge print with her eyes. I looked up halfway through the entry and noticed Mom seated there, staring at me. She smiled, a smile full of nostalgia. “When you were little, I used to have to read the menu,” she remarked. I answered, “Then it’s time for you to unwind and allow me to repay the favor.”

We had a pleasant talk over supper, nothing special just catching up on each other’s recent lives. We were talking so much that the movie was over. She responded, “I’ll go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you,” when we got to her house later. I concurred.

“How did your meal date go?” When I arrived home, I asked my wife. Really good. Much more so than I ever would have thought,” I replied. My mother passed away after a severe heart attack a few days later. I had no opportunity to help her because it happened so quickly. After a while, I got an envelope containing a duplicate restaurant receipt from the same establishment where my mother and I had our meal. “I paid this bill in advance,” stated a note that was attached. Even though I wasn’t sure if I could make it, I nevertheless bought for two plates: one for your wife and one for you. You’ll never understand how important that evening was to me.

“Son, you have my love.” That’s when I realized how important it is to tell our loved ones we care about them and to give them the time they deserve. Nothing in life is more essential than your family.
