Written by Jeremy Spillman and Dave Turnbull, the lovely lyrics were released in June 2005. The song was the second single to be released from Adkin’s album “Songs About Me.”

This eerie tune was inspired by Tennessee-born Corporal Patrick Nixon of the US Marine Corps, who was murdered on March 23, 2003, in an ambush in Iraq.

Adkins said he had been searching for the ideal song to pay tribute to all of the military personnel who have given their lives in the line of duty for their nation. In his opinion, “Arlington” was non-political and did not glorify war; rather, it honored and paid tribute to those who sacrificed everything for the ideals that our nation was founded on.

Billboard’s Deborah Evans Price noted how well Adkins’ well-known deep voice fits the narrative and the sentiment of the song. “This hauntingly beautiful song about sacrifice, honor, and the cost of freedom is the perfect vehicle for Adkins’ deep, resonant baritone,” the author writes.
