A recent occurrence that caught everyone’s attention happened while I was flying. An authoritative-looking man confronted a recklessly behaving youngster. What came next was an impressive demonstration of dominant presence that made an effect on all of us.
With a severe and uncompromising face, the man towered over the adolescent. His strong voice reverberated throughout the cabin, urging everyone to pay attentively. The man’s abruptly authoritative manner made the teenager shrink back in his seat.
Unfazed, the stranger leaned in closer, his eyes searing the youth. He made it clear that when the adolescent’s disruptive behavior was having an impact on everyone on the flight, it was his business. The man told the adolescent to tidy up the mess he had made and demanded an apology.
At first hesitating, the adolescent nervously peered around, trying to find a way out. He whispered an apology and started to tidy up, realizing there was no way out. Admiration for the man who stepped in grew throughout the cabin as the stress subsided.
My mind raced with questions about who this man was and why he felt the need to address the teenager in such a forceful manner. One thing became evident, though I would never know the answers: he had imparted to us all an important lesson in decency and respect. The flight turned out to be enlightening, instead of being a nightmare.
As we went along, I couldn’t help but think about how important it is to confront rude behavior. This episode reminded us that we should never be scared to step in and correct incorrect behavior when we see it, no matter how old we are. These are the times that mold our civilization and teach the next generation important truths.
