After discovering a letter with my name under our bathtub, I filed for divorce from my husband while he was unconscious.
Sarah finds out about her husband’s covert affair through a letter she finds after he suffers a coma-causing mishap in the bathroom. Can she get a man in a coma divorced?
We would usually spend Friday nights at home watching a movie and eating dinner. James was always so appreciative of the small things, and I had to agree that staying home and unwinding was soothing.
But our evening soon changed from being calm and pleasant to being frightening and boisterous.
A loud scream came from the bathroom as I was doing the dishes, waiting for James to finish his shower and come back downstairs so we could watch our movie.
My husband was unconscious near the bathtub when I arrived at the scene, my heart racing.
I put James’s head on my lap and murmured, “Oh, James.”
I dialed emergency services without thinking twice. All I needed was for him to be sent to the hospital.
I had to make certain that he would be alright.
When James was strapped to the gurney and the ER physicians were moving him around, I was standing against the wall at the hospital.
A doctor cried out, “Sarah.” “Your spouse is unconscious.” After I get all the results, I will provide you with a detailed report.
I nodded as I tried to take everything in. James had been doing well. After supper, he helped me clear the table. He then took a shower.
Is it possible that he fell and struck his head? I pondered in my mind.
The doctor said, “Go home, Sarah.” “Acquire some rest and perhaps some of James’ personal possessions. similar to toiletries and pajamas. I’m not sure how long he will be unconscious.
I returned home with renewed energy as a result of having a goal. I had to return to the hospital after gathering James’ possessions.
I went to the bathroom and started looking for evidence right away. I looked for a water puddle, wherever James could have fallen.
I got down on my hands and knees and deposited my purse on the restroom mat.
However, nothing was present.
While rushing to get James’ necessities, I realized I had to call my mother-in-law and let her know what was going on.
I quickly returned to the restroom and attempted to retrieve my phone from my purse. However, as I bowed down to get it, I noticed an odd element that I had overlooked during my initial toilet search.
There found a sealed letter under the bathtub that had my name written on it in my sister Amelia’s distinctive handwriting. Amelia had moved to a different city a year prior, but she had broken off all communication.
I shook my hands and opened the missive.
My marriage’s foundation broke with every phrase.
Amelia admitted to being in a relationship with James. She writes of the terrible remorse she felt.
Sarah, I can’t even look at myself in the mirror. The shame of what we did has destroyed me.
I continued reading while experiencing nausea from meals.
May, your niece… In reality, she is James’ daughter. The sole positive outcome of the affair was her.
Amelia continued by saying that Hugh, her spouse, had acknowledged May as his own and had never doubted her paternity.
However, with the knowledge I now possessed, I could see James’ eyes in May. A medical paper that described a rare hereditary ailment that undoubtedly ran in James’ family was attached.
Through my disbelief, Amelia’s cry for forgiveness came through. She clarified that she was frantic to deal with her daughter’s medical issues after Hugh was fired from his job.
There I was, sitting on the chilly bathroom floor, surrounded by the shattered pieces of my marriage and my strained bond with my sister.
When I gave Amelia a call, our mutual quiet broke down.
Sarah, I’m so very sorry! I told her I knew everything, and she started crying over the phone.
“I used to think I could protect you by keeping this from you forever, but I was at my breaking point. I needed my sister because May was becoming ill.
I needed proof that the story was true; I didn’t want to deal with Amelia.
And it existed. Without saying anything more, I hung up the phone.
But with James still in a coma and his condition unknown, how could I address him? However, based on the doctor’s conversational tone with me, something seemed off.
I filed for divorce a few days later, not wanting to face James while he was still unconscious.
James awoke two weeks later to find his mother by his bedside, notifying him of our divorce.
I relocated James’ belongings from our home to his mother’s.
And I thought that I could be a good big sister instead of a wife.
I made amends with Amelia and entered May’s life. She was just a helpless little child entangled in the chaos of people at the end of the day. She was meant to be treasured and protected by humans.
My heart was drawn to her even after the betrayal.
How would you have responded in that situation?
