A 27-year-old woman had promised her father one last time to save her newborn twins from the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene. In the hopes that her sons would be safe, she took sanctuary in her home, but destiny had other ideas.
Hurricane Helene killed thirty-three people and left a path of damage as it ravaged Georgia. They included Kobe Williams, the mother of twin boys who were one month old.
Having having wreaked havoc over the southeastern United States, the twins, Khyzier and Khazmir, are the youngest known casualties of Hurricane Helene. Their passing has turned into a tragic reminder of the storm’s destructive might.
Just before the catastrophe, Kobe’s father, Obie Williams, had a conversation with his daughter. Kobe assured her father that she would heed his advise and seek refuge in the toilet with her babies as the storm pounded her Thomson, Georgia, home.
She prayed it would be sufficient to shield them from the storm’s fury. The family’s life would be irrevocably altered by what transpired next.
On the day of the storm, Kobe’s daily phone call to her father was laced with anxiety. Outside his daughter’s trailer, Obie could hear the trees slapping against the windows and the screaming winds.
Even though the storm had already wreaked havoc, Kobe assured her that she would heed his instructions and remain in the restroom with her babies.
Obie tried to call Kobe again a few minutes after the call ended, but he didn’t pick up. The family became aware that anything was amiss at that point.
Only later that day did one of Kobe’s brothers succeed in getting to her house. He had to contend with downed power lines and fallen trees strewn all over the roads.
When he got there, he discovered something too heartbreaking to describe. Just where Kobe had taken refuge with her sons, a big tree had smashed through the roof of her trailer. Kobe was crushed by the crash and fell on top of her infants. None of them made it out alive.
