I couldn’t get rid of the uneasy sensation when I took my seat on the flight back from seeing my mother. I had no idea that the woman seated across from me would pull apart the seams of my picture-perfect marriage.
Clara was the name of my husband Oscar’s former spouse. He’d shown me pictures from their wedding, and I recognized her. Her indifferent expression became a courteous smile, and we awkwardly greeted each other.
I was not expecting Clara to be that friendly. Our discussion flowed well, and she seemed genuinely eager in getting to know me. However, I felt there was more going on under her amiable façade.
When she disclosed that our house, which Oscar and I had lived in together for three years, was initially intended for her, the conversation took an unexpected turn. Each and every choice had been hers. A sick feeling swept over me.
However, that was just the start. Another shocking revelation from Clara was that Oscar continued to send her flowers on their anniversary and her birthday each year. Her favorite flowers were the identical tulips he’d always remembered. I was at a loss for words as I tried to grasp how deeply their relationship still persisted.
The icing on the cake was when Clara told us that Oscar continued to call her anytime he needed someone to talk to, even throughout our own arguments over marriage. It was as though I was residing in an alternate reality where my spouse’s history and present collided.
Clara’s final comments, “You seem like a nice girl, and I thought you deserved to know the truth,” rang in my ears as the plane touched down. Although it appeared sincere, the harm had already been done.
I was attempting to collect my thoughts while sitting in a coffee shop, but I couldn’t get rid of the betrayal sensation. “It’s over, Oscar,” I texted him, my fingers shaking with emotion. Talk to Clara. I was no longer able to disregard the truth because the trust had been betrayed.
I can’t help but think now: how could the man I trusted and loved maintain such secrets? Was this whole thing a front? The answers are still up in the air, much like my future.
