After he advised that I check myself into a nursing home, I started writing my son letters every day to express how much I missed him. He never answered, but one day a stranger arrived and gave me an explanation and a plan to get home. At the age of 81, I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, which makes it difficult for me to move around on my own. My son Tyler and his spouse Macy found it challenging to care for me, so they concluded that I ought to reside in a nursing facility.
“Mom, we can’t take care of you all day,” Tyler explained. We must start working now. We don’t offer medical care. His sudden change of heart confused me because I had always tried to stay away from them. I used to spend much of my time in my room using my walker to travel around the house. “I promise not to be in your way. Please do not place me in a nursing home. I pleaded to be allowed to live out the remainder of my days in this home your father had constructed for me.
But Tyler dismissed my concerns, saying the house my late husband James had built was “too big for me.” “Mom, come on,” he prodded her. Give the house to Macy and me to take care of! With all this space, we could have a gym and other workplaces. There is ample room for remodeling.
That’s when I realized Tyler was only interested in keeping the house to himself and didn’t really care about me. I was crying a bit, too devastated to admit that my son had turned conceited. Where did I make a mistake? That night, as I went to bed, I thought. It seemed I had been mistaken to think I had produced a kind and considerate man. I never imagined that my own son would start to dislike me.
Tyler and Macy drove me to a neighboring assisted living facility and told me that the staff would take care of me round-the-clock. “Don’t worry, Mom; we’ll visit as often as we can,” Tyler comforted me. Hearing him comment that maybe living in a nursing home wouldn’t be all that bad after all since they would still be visiting made me feel a little better. Tyler had just promised to get rid of me, and I had no knowledge of that.
Every day at the elderly home felt like it would never end. No matter how kind the nurses and other residents were, I still longed to be with my family instead than in a strange place. Without a phone or iPad, I would write to Tyler every day to ask for a visit or just to check in on them. But I received no response, and no one came to see me. After two years, I lost up hope that someone would ever arrive.
I pleaded, “Please, take me home,” every night, but after two years I tried telling myself to quit up. Subsequently, I was shocked to hear from my nurse that a man in his forties had visited the front desk and requested to see me. “Is my son here to visit at last?” I pondered this as I hastily scooped up my walker and made my way to the front. When I arrived, I smiled, assuming it would be Tyler, but it was a man I hadn’t seen in a while. “Mom!” he said, and he hugged me tightly.
“Ron? Is that you, Ron? Startled, I enquired. “This is me, Mom,” How are things going for you? I apologize for keeping you waiting so long for my visit. “After arriving back from Europe, I went straight to your house,” he remarked.
“My house? Were Macy and Tyler there? “They put me in this nursing home a few years ago, and I haven’t seen them since,” I responded, bewildered. Ron looked at me gravely and motioned for me to sit down.
I found Ron’s statements to be really astounding. In addition to being upset about what my son had done to me, I was also deeply heartbroken to learn of his dying. I spent the entire day in deep sorrow for Tyler and my daughter-in-law, Macy. Ron comforted me in silence while I cried, holding me close until I felt ready to talk again.

Ron was a boy I had once welcomed into my home. He and Tyler had been best of friends and best of best as children. After Tyler’s parents left, Ron was raised by his grandmother and lived in poverty while Tyler had access to everything he could possibly want. I took care of him like a kid of mine, feeding and clothed him until he left for college in Europe. Ron never returned to the US after landing a big position in Europe, and we progressively lost touch. I didn’t believe I would see him again until he showed up at the assisted living facility.
Once I was comfortable, he said, “Mom,” quite quietly. It appears that you are not a good fit for this assisted living facility. Allow me to take you home. I would love taking care of you. Once more, I found myself in tears. After my own son abandoned me, this man—we are not even related by blood—was eager to take me in and look after me. “Are you really going to do that for me?” I answered.
“Mom, you know what? It’s not even required to ask. Ron gave me a hug and said, “I am nothing without you. You are the reason I am who I am today.”
That night, Ron assisted me with packing and drove me to his new home. There, I learned that he had a large family, and they were all quite kind to me. For the rest of my life, I was surrounded by people who genuinely loved and cared for me, and I led a happy and quiet existence.
