An Athens, Alabama, store owner announced he wouldn’t be carrying two specific Pepsi products, which caused controversy and sparked an online discussion.

The NFL, whose emblem was placed on the aforementioned products, is something that Phillip Stewart, the owner of S&Z Grocery, claimed he just could not sell.

“I don’t want to support them in any way, because I feel like it’s just wrong,” he stated in an interview with WAFF. “I can’t in good conscience sell the product because it does have the logo on it,” he continued.

Steward told his fans on Facebook that he would be discontinuing the products because he disagreed with certain NFL players’ disrespect for the flag by bending during the playing of the national anthem.

Many athletes were bending over as a show of protest against the treatment of persons of color by the police during the anthem.

Stewart clarified that while he completely understood the athletes’ protests, he thought “there are other ways to deal with it.”

This has highlighted it. Though I disagree with the strategy, I’m confident something positive can come from this,” he remarked.

This owner has no objections about Pepsi or the protest’s goal. In contrast, he still selling their goods—just not the ones bearing the NFL brand.

While some thought Stewart was foolish for making the choice he did, others applauded him for sticking to his convictions.
