Finding Priceless Pennies

Could you tell what kind of cent this is? Coins frequently lurk in plain sight.

and some have the potential to be far more valuable than they seem. News sources have revealed that one specific coin has a substantial value!

The 1943 Copper Wheat Penny’s Value

Coin Trackers, the New York Post, KHOU, and Daily Mail UK all state that a 1943 copper wheat cent in mint condition may bring in over $85,000! Due to a lack of copper during World War II, pennies were mostly constructed of steel in 1943 and were zinc-plated to avoid rust. The U.S. Mint intended to strike all 1943 cents on zinc-coated steel planchets, according to Coin Week.

The Error That Increased Its Value
That year, a few copper blanks inadvertently made their way into the minting process.

Coins that were formerly considered “mistakes” are now fetching five- and six-figure prices. These 1943 copper wheat coins must be in mint condition to fetch valuations of about $85,000. According to Coin Tracker, even those in worse conditions are still averaging $60,000. Saul Teichman, a U.S.

Mint makes a mistake and explains how collectors raise the value:

Collectors have a unique value for 1943 copper cents. They fetch far more on the market than other historical mistakes. Despite being less common, many World War II mistakes only fetch a small portion of the price because they lack the unique cachet.

Watch Out for Counterfeits

Due to the growing demand for the 1943 copper wheat penny, there are currently a lot of fakes on the market.

Thieves can alter a 1948 copper penny by filing down the left side of the eight to make it look like a 1943 coin. Some would even paint a copper covering on common steel pennies to make them look like the real thing.

Coin Trackers recommends using a magnet to detect counterfeits. “A solid copper penny will not stick to a magnet, while a steel penny with copper plating will,” claims Daily Mail UK.
