Recent events have provoked heated discussion: a mother purposefully ruined her son’s wedding to expose his troubled history and make him face his obligations. She stands by her choice and seeks understanding, even though some may consider her actions to be extreme.
The tragic backstory is that Tommy, the son with Down syndrome, and his first wife were abandoned by Mike, the son. His family was in financial difficulties when he severed all ties. Mike’s mother realized she had to take action when he revealed his intention to remarry.
On his wedding day, she confronted Mike while holding Tommy in her arms, revealing his carelessness to the horrified guests. It makes sense that the soon-to-be bride was upset, so she called off the wedding and left Mike to deal with the fallout.
Although some would disagree with the mother’s tactics, her goal was to have Mike answer for his acts, not to sabotage the wedding. She feels that in order to make him realize his fatherly responsibilities, she had to step in.
The mother’s bravery has forced the issue of responsibility and atonement to be discussed. She’s hoping that Mike will at last take the lead and be the parent Tommy deserves.
